• Thomas Edler

    Tenor & Composer

Bringing classical values to modern listeners through performance, education, and composition

  • An Introduction

My musical approach is informed by a diverse background in solo performance, operatic repertoire, and art music, as well as experience performing with choral ensembles. My academic training includes a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance, providing a foundation in both pedagogical practice and advanced vocal artistry. These experiences shape my commitment to combining historical understanding, stylistic integrity, and healthy vocal technique in the development of adult singers, fostering musicianship that is both technically grounded and artistically expressive.

As a St. Louis native, I am proud to be part of a community with a rich musical heritage. I value the opportunity to share my training and experience with local singers, fostering a love of classical music and helping others discover, develop, and sustain their voices through thoughtful instruction and artistic exploration.

  • A Philosophy of Music

Bel Canto, Vocal Health, and the Art of Building the Voice

I believe that the art of singing begins with respect for the human voice: its natural beauty, its individual character, and its capacity to grow through thoughtful, disciplined study. Rooted in the bel canto tradition, my philosophy centers on developing a free, balanced, and expressive instrument through healthy technique, artistic repertoire, and a deep understanding of the relationship between breath, body, and sound.

The voice is not something to be forced into submission, but an instrument to be cultivated with patience, intelligence, and care. Beautiful singing grows from coordination rather than tension, from consistent practice rather than excessive effort, and from a technique that serves musical expression rather than drawing attention to itself. I value the principles of legato, balanced registration, clear vowels, flexible breath management, resonance, and ease of production as essential foundations for a sustainable vocal life.

As a classically trained tenor, I am particularly drawn to the bel canto ideal: singing that combines technical freedom, line, elegance, agility, and expressive sincerity. I believe that vocal technique and musical artistry are inseparable. Technique gives the singer freedom, while musicianship gives that freedom purpose. Every phrase should have direction, every breath should serve the musical thought, and every note should contribute to a compelling artistic whole.

I believe that repertoire must be chosen with both the present voice and the future voice in mind. Especially for adult singers, the right repertoire offers more than an opportunity to perform; it provides a pathway for development. Carefully selected art songs, arias, and classical literature can strengthen coordination, refine musicianship, expand expressive range, and gradually build vocal confidence without demanding more than the instrument is ready to give. Repertoire should challenge the singer thoughtfully, encourage healthy growth, and honor the unique qualities of each voice.

Teaching adults requires an appreciation for the experiences, responsibilities, and individual goals they bring to their musical lives. Adult singers deserve instruction that respects their intelligence, accommodates their varied backgrounds, and recognizes that meaningful vocal development can occur at every stage of life. Whether a student is discovering classical singing for the first time, returning to the voice after many years, or refining an established technique, I believe progress should be measured not only by range or volume, but by increasing ease, consistency, confidence, musical understanding, and expressive freedom.

Above all, I believe that singing should enrich the life of the singer. The pursuit of beautiful sound must never come at the expense of vocal well-being. A healthy voice is not merely a means to an artistic end; it is the foundation upon which a lasting relationship with music can be built.

My goal is to cultivate singers who understand their instruments, value the traditions that have shaped classical singing, and develop the skills to communicate music with authenticity and artistry. Through bel canto principles, thoughtful repertoire, healthy vocal habits, and patient instruction, I seek to help each singer build a voice that is not only capable and expressive, but sustainable—a voice that can continue to grow, serve the music, and bring joy for years to come.
